WWW Wednesday

1. What are you currently reading?

  • The Apothecary Diaries vol. 2 (LN) by Natsu Hyuuga: the more Apothecary Diaries I engage with across adaptations, the more I'm starting to think that the problem here is just... I don't actually like Maomao very much, and I also think it irks me (not the book's fault) how often I see her touted as such ~excellent~ autism rep and how relatable she is. I know the folks saying that are ultimately talking about themselves but idk I really really really don't find her relatable. It comes back to: I want to see these characters grow and change, especially Maomao, and them not doing so is annoying to me. It keeps hovering right on the edge of "why am I still reading it if I don't like it that much?" because I DO like it enough to keep reading, but only barely. Idk.
  • The World We Make by N. K. Jemisin: I'm stalled. Ostensibly it's because I have three novels on Libby rn and they're gonna come due, whereas this I own and it can wait, but also I really didn't like multiple things about the previous chapter, and with the amount of book left I have no idea how everything that's been introduced can possibly be satisfactorily resolved. All in all, this has felt more like the idea of a book instead of an actual book. It's like how people will be like "fanfic authors, did you know, you don't have to write the whole thing, you actually can just skip to all the parts you're excited for and leave the rest out and it's okay because this is all for fun!" and that's what it feels like happened to the book except while I'll tolerate it in a fanfic it really doesn't work in a novel. It's disappointing, because I thought the first one was much stronger than this.
  • 盗墓笔记 vol. 2 by 南派三叔: keeping at it, tho I'm behind my page-a-day pace. Oh well.

2. What have you recently finished reading?

You can tell I wasn't enjoying my novel reads much cause I read so much manga.

  • Cherry Magic! Thirty Years of Virginity Can Make You a Wizard?! vol. 15 by Yuu Toyota
  • Dandadan vol. 8 by Yukinobu Tatsu
  • My Love Mix-Up! vol. 8 and 9 by Aruko: finally got the last two volumes of this through Libby. The amnesia fake out in vol. 9 nearly made me furious enough to rage quit, I'm glad it was a fake out. The pacing on vol. 9 still felt off, tho, but oh well. A cute series, all in all.
  • SHWD episode 1 by sono.N: modern paranormal, GL. This was kinda a mess, there kept being logical leaps between panels and the way it talked about women in the workplace was just weird. If the episodes were longer I'd probably not bother keeping on but it's only 4 episodes long and each episode is only about 40 pages so I guess I'll read at least one more.
  • Sakamoto Days vol. 18 by Yuto Suzuki
  • Cute but Not Cute by Senmu Sakishita: modern BL. Two unpleasant people making each other less pleasant. Y'all know I like toxic but this was so meh.
  • The White and Blue Between Us by Kiyuhiko: modern BL. Another mediocre BL, premised on one character lying to the other to break up with him and then their reunion years later. Random pointless rape for no reason? This all seemed so pointless and bad.
  • Star and Hedgehog by Nayuta Nago: modern BL. After reading the other two, this was a breath of fresh air. Very cute, likeable characters, good chemistry.
  • Kase-san and Bento (Kase-san vol. 2) by Hiromi Takashima: more jealousy, more insecurity, the constant circling back to these themes is so annoying.
  • Murderous Lewellyn's Candlelit Dinner manhwa vol. 2 to 6 by Sumnagi: okay so I went to the library yesterday, and was like !!!! cause they had vol 2 and 3 and I'd really liked vol 1 when I read it last summer, and so I read those, and nope couldn't stop, pirated the rest, and oh dayum. I might have a new obsession. They're such precious fucked up hurt/comfort murder beans, I love them.

3. What will you be reading next?

Novels: I have Apothecary Diaries vol. 2 and 3 and The Baker Thief by Claudie Arseneault (which I started last month) on Libby, so I gotta read those. (...when I went to check Libby I discovered my hold of A Drop of Corruption has also come through so now four, FOUR novels due imminently on Libby, hahaaaaa)

Graphic Novels (Physical): I haven't actually put my new library loans in a coherent pile yet so I'm not sure, but I'm most excited about Spy x Family vol. 15 so odds are that'll be next.

Graphic Novels (Libby): A Tropical Fish Yearns for Snow vol. 4 by Makoto Hagino is due in 4 days, and Flip by Ngozi Ukazu is due in five days, so. Definitely those, at least.

SGA: Where the Brave Dare Not Go by Telesilla

Fandom: Stargate Atlantis
Characters/Pairings: John Sheppard/Rodney McKay, Ronon Dex, Teyla Emmagan, Anne Teldy, Carson Beckett, Radek Zelenka, Jennifer Keller
Rating: Explicit
Length: 18,013
Content Notes: Graphic depictions of violence. Jeannie, Rodney's sister, has died long before the story starts. Academic ethics are somewhat compromised!
Creator Links: Telesilla on AO3, helens78 on Audiofic Archive
Themes: Crack treated seriously, First time, Friends to lovers, Animal transformation, Werecreatures, Complete AU, Interspecies pairing, Research, Worldbuilding (I had difficulty finding actual tags to reflect some of these because while there's a minor character werewolf in this, most of the Weres aren't wolves.)

Summary: John Sheppard has had over twenty years to come to grips with the fact that every four or five weeks, he turns into a mountain lion. Like most Were, he accepts that that's just the way it is, and so he's not particularly interested when he learns that researchers at the local university are trying to to develop drugs that will help Were control their cycles. Then he meets Dr. Rodney McKay, a brilliant but irascible biochemist with reasons of his own for spearheading the university's Were research and John suddenly finds himself struggling with more than just his attraction to McKay.

Reccer's Notes: Werewolves, or in this case, Werecreatures in general, are a popular crack fantasy trope. This story's excellent as it turns the fantasy trope into a real minority of individuals having Were genes, forced to change cyclically to an animal form. In this story's interesting worldbuilding, Were are discriminated against and find it hard to get jobs and live as full members of society. John is a werecougar and he meets Rodney who's a scientist running a research trial to test a new drug intended to suppress mandatory cycling. The story is crack "taken seriously" as there's no fantasy element. This is a genetically-driven thing, with Were a slightly different species to humans. Their cycles vary according to gene expression, and aren't moon-driven. Plus, in this world, Telesilla shows the politics of discrimination against Were, with John initially resisting the research as he's angry that they're yet again being viewed as humans with a sickness that needs treatment. The story has lots of plot and drama, a great developing relationship with Rodney, and a satisfying conclusion. Very much recommended!

2026 Fan Crafts Bazaar: All the Details!

The Fandom Trumps Hate Fan Crafts Bazaar

Every year, we get emails and comments from people who make physical fan crafts or art who want to list their creations in FTH. There are a variety of reasons that non-digital fanworks are not a good fit for the way we run the main FTH auction, but in 2020 we introduced the Fan Crafts Bazaar, a way for fan crafters to support our orgs parallel to the main auction. If you'd like to see what it looks like, you can view last year's Bazaar here.

2026 Fan Crafts Bazaar calendar:

Monday, Jan 26th - Signups open
Friday, Feb 27th - Craft Bazaar opens
Tuesday, March 3rd - Signups close
Wednesday, Mar 18th - Craft Bazaar closes (though individual stalls may close sooner)

Twinned Trilogy Crowdfunding Campaign: Final 48 Hours!

A banner with a cobblestoned street in black-and-white at night as the background. It's entitled The Twinned Trilogy by Tris Lawrence, and shows three books covers: Book 1, Commit to the Kick, featuring a muscular man in a purple and white football uniform with a roaring bear and dragon behind him; Book 2, Missed Fortunes, with two people in casual modern clothing falling from a tower as the twoer burns and explodes, cards falling about them; and Book 3: Into the Split, showing two people from behind as they look toward three gnarled, dark trees in a heavily shadowed forest. The Duck Prints Press logo is in the upper right corner.

Our Kickstarter to fund our release of the Twinned trilogy by Tris Lawrence is entering its final 48 hours! We’ve hit our base goal handily, and we’re $70 from our first stretch goal as of when this post is being written. We’d love your help in reaching that stretch goal, and beyond!

This Weekend: Running Gagg in Geneseo, NY!

If you live in Western New York, love gaming, and are looking for something low-key and fun to do this coming weekend, come say hi at Running Gagg, the 30th-annual convention run by the Geneseo Area Gaming Group!

Running Gagg runs January 30th to February 1st, and is held in the SUNY Geneseo Student Union. I’ll be vending in the Dealer’s Room, roughly 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Sunday. (I don’t know my exact hours, as the Dealer’s room doesn’t have set times, so it’s kinda up to me, and it’ll depend on my family). You can see the full vendor’s list here! There are about 20 of us. There’s also lots of ttrpgs, board games, and more – Running Gagg is always a good time! And don’t miss the charity auction to support Ronald McDonald House! I’ll be donating a book to it, and 10% of my proceeds (and all vendor proceeds!) at the con go to support running and organizing the con.

I hope to see folks there!

(Yes I still call all the SUNY schools SUNY. I am old and they can’t stop me. My wife’s a SUNY Geneseo alum and I’m a SUNY Binghamton alum.)

Get to Know “Into the Split” by Tris Lawrence

A graphic entitled Get to Know Into the Split by Tris Lawrence. In the center is a book covered, Twinned Book 3, showing two people standing side by side, from the back, as they look toward three gnarled old trees in a deeply shadowed forest. Around the image, arrows point to text. The text is. 1. dimension jumping; 2. dreams (and Dreams) have power); 3. friends and found family; 4. established mlm relationship (includes an mlm pride flag); 5. seeking a place of safety; 6. happy ending!; and 7. ...college coursework + saving the multiverse.

For the third and final book of the Twinned trilogy by Tris Lawrence, there’s a lot I can’t say because shhhh, spoilers! But here’s a taste of the tropes and events I thought y’all might like a sneak peek of.

Our Kickstarter campaign is funding the first-ever print edition of Into the Split. Become a backer and get the whole trilogy!

Only three days left to back! This campaign ends at 10:30 a.m. Eastern time on January 28th.

Fandom: Star Trek

Rating: Teen and Up
Length: 4188 words over 2 stories
Creator Links: almondrose at ao3
Theme: Crack Treated Seriously

Summary: "an AU where the enterprise is a VSA ship filled with vulcans"

Reccer's Notes: This short series (two stories, "logical" and "illogical") is one of my favorite pick-me-ups. Captain Skirk of the VSA's exasperation with his CMO's insistence that Spock is human slays me, as does said CMO's reaction to encountering his alternate-universe human self.

Get to Know “Missed Fortunes” by Tris Lawrence

A graphic entitled "Get to Know Missed Fortunes by Tris Lawrence." In the center is a book cover, second in a trilogy called "Twinned," with artwork showing two people falling from an exploding, burning tower. Around the graphic, arrows point to short descriptions and a few pride flags. The descriptions read: 1. sapphic relationship, with the wlw pride flag; 2. using tarot to predict the future; 3. old friends, new awkwardness; 4. asexual main character, with the ace pride flag; 5. dreams, signs, and portents; 6. twins (one is trans!) with the trans pride flag; and 7. the Shadows are growing darker.

Missed Fortunes is the second book of the Twinned trilogy. Yesterday, we shared some tropes and representation from the first book, Commit to the Kick. One guess what we’ll be sharing tomorrow! Each book is about the same group of friends at the same university, but each has a different point of view characters! Don’t worry, though, your faves from each book don’t go away.

We’re currently running a Kickstarter to fund this trilogy. If you haven’t taken a peek at it yet, there’s no time like the present! (Especially because the campaign ends in 4 days!)
