so... one of the hard parts about writing Jiang Cheng and Lan Wangji's murder roadtrip through Yunmeng is that... it wasn't just the two of them on that roadtrip. This is 2 of the highest ranking members of the landed gentry, they go *no where* alone and especially not on months-long trips through occupied territory to find some swords and a missing person.
They have retainers, they have advisors, they have all sorts of people around them, all the fucking time. (They're also trained in politics from a very young age, because *that's how you train heirs to powerful seats*. Do you think, for instance, that Charles hasn't touched anything political before Elizabeth died? NO. And the British royal family doesn't even *do anything* besides bea parasite on the citizens of their country and a tourist trap.)
ANYWAY.
JC and LWJ needed people to go on their roadtrip with them, I needed people with a smidgeon of emotional intelligence besides JYL. So.. OCs. A lot of them, sorry. (Ok, there's 13 right now with evidence of a 14th, but she doesn't come into play until part 2, and she's not included below).
Meet them. (these are in the order they're in in my notes, which... is not a great organizational system, but you get what I have)
The Jiang sect:
The Lan Sect:
As I said in the fic, I did a decent amount of research and confirmed that these are names that actual people have used (or... i lifted them wholesale from other shows, i'm not sorry about that either), so name crimes are possible! but someone else did those name crimes first.
and if you're seeing this and would like to read the series, you can find it here: On Your Hands and Knees
(ETA, over a year later: you can find the NPCs for the sequel, Try Not to Hate the Light, HERE

The Jiang sect:
- Chen Yue- he/him; archer; Chen Ran's big brother
- Li Zihong- she/her
- Yu Hong- he/him; JC's youngest uncle- he's JYL's age. I have no idea why he's with the Jiang sect instead of the Yu, but here he is.
- Jiang Chun- he/him; one of JC's cousins; Jiang Yanxin's older brother. Bit of a hothead.
- Chen Ran- she/her; scout; Chen Yue's younger sister
- Shen Fei- she/her; youngest survivor of Lotus Pier at 15, perpetual meimei energy; (baby lesbian); hero worships WWX
- Pei Ruochen- he/him
- Jiang Yanxin- he/him; one of JC's cousins; Jiang Chun's younger brother, calmest and most level headed; several years older than JC
The Lan Sect:
- Lan Ziyu- she/her; medic; one of LJY's mom's; perpetually done with this shit.
- Lan Dongmei- he/him; scout
- Lan Wencheng-he/him
- Lan Mengyun- he/him; plays the xiao, played senior disciple to LWJ's junior before everything
- Liu Chenyin- they/them (is this linguistically difficult? yes. do i care? kinda, but not enough to stop myself)
