Fandom: Lord Peter Wimsey
Pairings/Characters: Lord Peter Wimsey/Harriet Vane (not requited - yet)
Rating: G
Length: 12,200
Creator Links: [personal profile] nineveh_uk
Theme: crack treated seriously

Summary: Harriet Vane and Lord Peter Wimsey have triumphantly solved the Wilvercombe murder, and only want to return to London. But first they must solve a new mystery: why they have woken up in one another's bodies, and what on earth are they going to do about it?

Reccer's notes Bodyswap is a pretty cracky trope, but here [personal profile] nineveh_uk uses it very effectively to explore the nuances of the complicated and touchy relationship between Peter and Harriet. As the summary suggests, it's set straight after Have His Carcase, where in canon they seem somehow simultaneously closer to and further away from resolving their relationship than ever. The bodyswap twist doesn't make things any less confusing. The voice is pitch perfect: if Dorothy L. Sayers had thought to write this premise, this is exactly what it would have sounded like.

Twinned Trilogy Excerpt: Meet Alaric

[personal profile] duckprintspress
A graphic featuring a stylized bear roaring before a silhouette of trees and a night sky. Text reads, An Excerpt from Commit to the Kick by Tris Lawrence. Alaric hunkers down on the line of scrimmage, calls the play on the third down, and waits for the snap from the center. He loops up, sees Marks coming toward him. He won't let Marks take this away from his team. The bear within him burgeons forth. It's the bear that sends him lumbering into Marks, throwing him roughly to one side before Alaric sinks back into humanity and rushes ahead. He hears the whistle, sees the flag, and he skids to a stop. The bear. Fuck. Kickstarting until January 28th!

Commit to the Kick is the first book of the Twinned trilogy by Tris Lawrence. We’re currently crowdfunding the entire trilogy on Kickstarter, and we’re already close to our goal! Commit to the Kick stars Alaric, an aromantic gay college freshman… who can also shapeshift into a bear, and a few other animal forms! His dream is to play football, but in a world that’s only recently learned of the existence of people with magical powers, it’s hard to find a league that will welcome someone who might transform into an animal mid-game. He’s come to Pine Hills University as it’s one of a few schools experimenting with mixed leagues but, well. The excerpt says it all.

Learn more about Commit to the Kick:

Don’t hesitate.
Don’t overthink it.
Commit to the kick.

For eighteen years, Alaric has lived under the cloying politics of family and his Clan community. His freshman year is supposed to be a chance to explore a world where Clan and his shapeshifting Talent isn’t central to his life. But when his inner bear bursts forth during his first football game, endangering those around him, Alaric realizes that it’s not so easy to ignore his past, or his own internalized anger.

In his quest for anger management, Alaric begins to train in taekwondo, and makes new friends in both sports. He finds that he is creating his own small community, where Clan, Mages, other Talents, and even humans come together and build their own found family.

When Alaric receives news that something has happened to his brother Orson, he must return and deal with his Clan and his place in their world. He discovers that old prejudices are still strong between Clan and Mage communities, but that both may be in danger from a creature long thought to be only a legend. Alaric must figure out how to move forward and prevent a war and protect both his home and newly built communities, his found family with him every step of the way.

To buy a copy of the first book of the Twinned trilogy, and learn more about the series as a whole (and maybe get all three books!) check out our Kickstarter! Running until 10:30 a.m. Eastern time on January 28th.

Fandom: Stargate Atlantis
Characters/Pairings: John Sheppard/Rodney McKay, Elizabeth Weir, Aiden Ford, Bates, Patrick Sheppard
Rating: Explicit
Length: 11,848
Content Notes: Author chose not to warn - my take would be that no AO3 warnings apply, although there's dubious consent at times, when John's being harassed as a sub.
Creator Links: Helenish on AO3, Ann ciudad on Audiofic Archive
Themes: Crack treated seriously, BDSM, Complete AU: BDSM, Friends to lovers, Worldbuilding, Trope inversion/subversion,

Summary: John entered the Air Force Academy in 1987; it was only the third year subs were accepted into the flight program. John wasn't the only one in his class, but he was the only one who looked like he did, and it didn't make him any friends.

Reccer's Notes: This story is well known in SGA fandom, and it's also crack treated seriously. The cracky premise is that it's set in a BDSM universe - almost everyone is bi and BDSM relationships are the norm, so there's no homophobia or DADT - but in this AU there is discrimination against subs. Unlike several other BDSM universe fics which are very much idfics revelling in the crack of John/Rodney being Dom/sub and the hotness and romance of their dynamic, Helenish turns the concept around, making John the attractive sub, and making the discrimination and "sexual" harassment he faces lifelong, especially as a sub in the military (and how that affects his character), the core of the story. It becomes an analogy for sexism and gender roles, and his expectations about being badly treated by doms come close to ruining his developing relationship with Rodney, an atypical dom who isn't "sexist", which disconcerts John. The story's complex and brilliantly written, and one I'll always return to. Very much recommended.

The Unpleasantness at the Bellona Club by Dorothy L. Sayers. Skipped to book 4 for my second try at Lord Peter Wimsey. Again I'm going to say solid but I'm not sold on loving Lord Peter. I am going to try Strong Poison per like a dozen people's recommendation. I did really like several things about this! )

The Everlasting by Alix E. Harrow. LOVED THIS <3 The prose was so good and there was so much yearning and devotion and tragedy and it had time travel/time loop and academia and fighting fascism and personally I love second person so the first/second person POV was very enjoyable and it had swap POV of the (mostly) same events and secret code and dragons!? I could go on. I feel like this was written with me in mind.

This hilarious story is a series of good advice for both evil henchmen and people who manage evil henchmen, dealing with all sorts of workplace hazards ranging from the aftermath of sex pollen to how to manage someone who is using their evil to annoy their own team and beyond. I've officially completed all my birthday activities for this year, so I can like, breathe again.

There was recreational axe throwing, joint TV marathons, dinners, gifts and hugs. I chose not to have any kind of party or gathering this year, so just saw friends individually or in small groups, and it worked out OK. I also celebrated [personal profile] roga's birthday (and will continue to tomorrow), so it all kind of worked out with multiple events.

How have you been doing, friends?

I'm feeling a bit better than I hoped to, at this time of the year.

ETA: I have cautiously started looking at social media again, in very very limited quantities, and as twitter seems like... not the place, I now have a bluesky. IDK IDK. But if you're on there I may also be on there sometimes too I guess.

Fandom: Stargate Atlantis'
Characters/Pairings: John Sheppard/Rodney McKay, Ronon Dex, Teyla Emmagan, Elizabeth Weir, Carson Beckett, Radek Zelenka
Rating: Explicit eventually
Length: ~33,000
Content Notes: no AO3 warnings, mentions of blood
Creator Links: boochicken on LJ
Themes: Crack treated seriously, Friends to lovers, First time, Vampires, Action/adventure

Summary: none

Reccer's Notes: Rodney gets turned into a vampire by rogue technology on a mission. This is crack taken seriously as there's no fantasy element, and for the initial part Rodney himself is adamant that vampires don't exist. The story takes this premise and plays it out in a canon setting, with Rodney having to develop coping methods for the downsides - like bursting into flame in sunlight (his super sunblock helps a bit), and accessing a supply of blood. Apart from the blood drinking and risk of immolation (and not having a pulse) he's very much his usual self, and, as ever, even manages to save the day despite these problems. It's a delightful story with lots of plot and action, and a friends to lovers romance with John. Gripping, and very well written!
